“My mother used to buy because we were five of us all in the university at the same time,” Ukagumaoha recalls. And in the mornings, he cranks out orders of Indomie jollof, a staple for thrifty Nigerian university students. There's an akara burger, made up of fried bean fritters that Ukagumaoha sandwiches between slices of sweet agege bread made by a local Ghanaian baker. While jollof is the headliner, Jolly-Jolly serves a number of other dishes that are even harder to find in the Bay. During the pandemic, however, after other job contracts had run their course, Ukagumaoha started thinking seriously about starting a food business, and started doing volunteer food prep at large corporate catering companies like Bon Appétit. After moving to the Bay Area in 2014, he worked mostly in the nonprofit sector for various housing programs. Ukagumaoha helped run a small restaurant during his university days in Nsukka, Nigeria. Of particular note is an extra-savory version that’s topped with kale and shrimp, both tossed in a potent shrimp-based sauce-an original creation, Ukagumaoha says, that adds a little bit of California flair to the traditional party dish. But the results speak for themselves: His jollof is packed with umami and fiery enough to make you break a sweat. Of course, Ukagumaoha won’t say what that ingredient is. (As Ukagumaoha quips, “Who would teach a male child how to cook if not your mother?”) In fact, the chef had been making jollof for years, but he says it never tasted quite right until recently, when his mother divulged her secret ingredient. It’s a family recipe, passed down from the chef's mother. (Luke Tsai)īut the star of the menu is that orange-tinted jollof rice, which is available in several different configurations, topped with oxtails or stewed goat meat or even kale. Located in a former pupusa shop across the street from the West Oakland BART station, Jolly-Jolly specializes in what chef-owner Jahswill Ukagumaoha describes as street foods. So when a new Nigerian takeout spot called Jolly-Jolly Coffee & Kitchen opened in West Oakland last month, it was happy news for jollof rice lovers across the Bay-and, really, for anyone who appreciates well-spiced food. ![]() In the Bay Area, however, the dish is still a relative rarity. The moment he is tempted to follow Ferris does he truly realize what it means to be free. ![]() Ferris is the one symbol that remains with Cameron by the end of the movie, because while Ferris is his own person and character, he has solidified himself as a part of Cameron, an allegory for what’s going on in Cameron’s psyche. The painting, the car, Ferris himself all stand as important symbols in Cameron’s development over the course of the film. Cameron no longer sees himself as nothing, after having been treated like nothing his entire life. It’s a moment in cinema history that stands out among other critically acclaimed films from the 80′s. This scene symbolizes Cameron diminishing the last of his fear of his father and himself. The Ferrari has been totaled, but this is far from a loss for Cameron. He finally starts thinking for himself, pushing himself to stand up for himself. Cameron realizes that living in fear is no life at all. He totals the car and he does so with a smile. This is where Cameron’s arc is completed. While it certainly isn’t easy to shake them, and it takes a lot more than just lying to yourself to let go of your anxieties, it’s a commentary on how those who are depressed, such as myself, let the weight of expectations stop them from doing what they truly want to do. Expectations are ultimately just in your head. I.e: “If you don’t come over here, you can find yourself a new best friend.” “You’ve been saying that since the 4th grade, pal.”) or because in his mind, he knows he needs to get out of the rut he’s found himself in since the day he was born. While Ferris is on the phone with Cameron in this scene, Ferris tells him his sickness is “just in your head.” It’s a line that goes deeper than the surface level of just Ferris being an asshole towards his friend. From there, shenanigans ensue, as they spend the day doing as much as they can with each other before Ferris would have to scheme his way back home before his parents arrive.Ĭameron is explicitly shown to be susceptible to Ferris’s manipulation tactics, aware of what Ferris is doing, he still does what he wants anyways, whether that be out of fear of losing Ferris (Ferris makes numerous empty threats towards Cameron about their relationship. Once the three of them are united and officially ditching school, Ferris Bueller treats the two of them to a day in the city, showing them everything he can as means of showing them the joy of living, before he and Cameron would have to graduate in June. Before dishing Sloane out of a boring history lecture, Ferris manipulates Cameron into letting him drive his fathers beloved 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California to go pick up Sloane from school. After duping his parents into believing he was sick for the 9th time in his senior high school year, he calls upon his friend Cameron, who was skipping school due to an alleged genuine sickness, who helps Ferris to bail his girlfriend Sloane out of class by faking the death of her grandmother via a fake phone call performed by Cameron to the principle of the school. Most people don’t enjoy the experience of standing in line. Lines exist because of scarcity in the face of demand. What’s the speed at which servers complete requests? Can we increase this?.How many customers are showing up? How quickly are they arriving?.The reality of customer service, however, presents far more questions than how to satisfy demand. Such a straightforward two-party transaction sounds simple enough. What are the factors deciding this?Īt the end of the day, Erlang decided queuing theory mostly centered around two parties: Erlang invented queuing theory in 1909 through observing the Danish Telephone Exchange and searching for a more efficient way to operate them. The more desirable the resources, the more customers are willing to wait in line.ĭanish engineer A.K. Lining up was born from excess demand and low supply. His book The French Revolution describes people standing in “ Queues, or Tails…so that the first-come be the first served” while waiting for limited supplies of bread. Queuing was first recorded by Thomas Carlyle in 1837. Standing in line to wait your turn seems like such a natural action at this point, you might be surprised to learn it hasn’t been around for so long. Why Do We Queue? The History and Psychology Behind Lines Still queuing up to learn more about queues? Definitions and spellings are only the first stop. “Cue” also has nothing to do with lining up, since it refers to a signal to action and not waiting for your turn at the ATM. What does “qued” mean? Unless, you’re referring to the Old English term for the devil, probably not much. In fact, there are several common misspellings that might mislead anyone wondering what this term means. Queues get confusing sometimes, especially when you’re talking about spelling. This can be as simple as letting people line up and be served in that order in a retail business, or giving out numbers and pushing people toward individual customer service windows. Assigning them a spot in line is a better way of keeping customers organized for both them and the business. Everybody wants to be served on time and in order. In a business context, queues are about how you order and attend to customers. Standing in a first-come-first-served line to buy that band’s CD, on the other hand, is a classic queue. For someone or something to be queued means that there must be underlying order in the wait.Ī concert where everyone gets to jam along to the music at the same time doesn’t constitute a queue. Starting very simply, who or what is queued? And how are queues defined?Īccording to the most general definition, a queue is people or objects waiting their turn to be serviced. Fortunately, you won’t have to wait around this time to find out more about queuing. Unlike the winding line inside your local government agency, queues haven’t been around forever. What does queued mean? What is the history behind queuing up? How do you define queues? Is there a psychology behind something as simple as waiting in line? So how much do you really know about queuing? You need to have a thorough understanding of lining up if you want to improve how you do business. But queuing is an essential part of the customer experience. Sure, you may understand what a line means when you see it. At this point, you only need to see a line stretching out before a store to immediately know there’s going to be a long wait.
